Remember how fun it was as a little girl to play with your mom, grandma, or aunt’s makeup? The best sleepovers were spent with sisters or friends, deep in a makeup bag giving each other makeovers and playing with all the different shimmer, sparkle, gloss, and color products available. Now that we’re grown women, why do we have to miss out on all that fun?! In this week’s blog post, we dare you to bring back the fun with a few ideas for mixing things up by blending, mixing, or layering your favorite lipstick and gloss colors… you might even consider inviting a few girlfriends over to play with you!
Makeup is an art, and just like painting or drawing, it requires some knowledge of your tools, a little skill for using them, and practice, practice, practice in order to perfect the right look(s). When it comes to mixing colors and products, we’ve put together a quick guide to set you on the right path…
If you look into your makeup bag or drawer, I’m sure you have a number of different lipsticks, tints, and glosses. Apriori Beauty’s Hint of Color line boasts a healthy variety of lipstick shades (7 to be exact) and one color-changing gloss. For the sake of this exercise, these lip products (plus a few more) will be our tools. Here’s what you’ll need to get started in the fun…
Before applying any color, you’ll want to make sure your lips are prepped and ready to go. To do this effectively, we recommend 3 steps:
- Cleanse — of course, any blank canvas should first be clean. Try Apriori Beauty’s Celloxylin® Step 1. Crème Cleanse twice daily to remove any impurities from the surface of the lips.
- Scrub — since our lips are exposed to the elements, and can sometimes have dead skin build-up, it’s important to scrub them at least once a week. This will help keep them in top condition and appearance, which is important in applying lip color smoothly and evenly. Try Apriori Beauty’s Celloxylin® Enzyme Activated Micro Scrub to effectively remove dead skin surface cells.
- Moisturize — finally, you need to make sure your lips are moisturized so color does not crack or crease after application. Apriori Beauty’s Eye+Lip Age Eraser is your perfect go-to lip moisturizer as it contains potent antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and moisturizers to help visibly reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles and protect lips from further damage.

To begin, think about what color family you want to work in… what looks best on your skin tone? For the sake of this article, we’ll be referencing nude and peach-based tones and pink and berry-based tones. You may have lipsticks or colors from other companies that range into more playful color ranges, so feel free to play with those as well! Start by mixing two shades in the same color family, but play with textures, effects, and placement on your lips. For example, working in the pink and berry-based tones, you may choose to use Rose or Berry Kiss as your base color and then use Shimmy Shimmy as an accent or highlight at the center of your lips.
Pink Pout and Nude Pink are other Moisturizing Lipstick shades that go well in this color family. When mixing shades, be sure to start with your lighter shade first, then add the darker shade a little bit at a time. For example, you may start with a base layer of Nude Pink on your lips, then gradually add Rose or Pink Pout with a few dots of color at a time (rubbing lips together to mix colors between applications) to add a little more brightness to your base nude shade.
Or, if you’re feeling a little more daring and interested in mixing between color families, we suggest starting with a nude shade as your base and adding a darker pink shade, such as Rose or Pink Pout, with a few dots of color at a time. Feeling even bolder? Add Shimmy Shimmy in the middle of your lips to make them pop with an extra highlight!
The nude and peach-based tones also look fabulous with the One for All Gloss over them. The slightly pink tone and shine of the gloss bring out the brightness and shine of your underlying base tone. Moisturizing Lipstick in Just Peachy with the One for All Gloss is the perfect combo to try this out with! (pictured right) >>
DON’T BE AFRAID TO PLAY!
At the end of the day, when you’re home alone or with your girlfriends experimenting with these colors, you can’t go wrong, so don’t be afraid to play around! You can always take something off that you don’t like and start over. But, if you never try different combinations out, you might just be missing out on your new favorite look. Play around, get messy, take cute selfies, and HAVE FUN!
